  Gluten - Health or Hype?

Supermarket shelves are stocked with alternatives for wheat, barley and rye products and more and more Australians are limiting their intake of goodies like pizza, pasta and cake.
But is gluten really to blame for the outbreak of symptoms, such as:

* ADHD
* Autism
* Irritable bowel syndrome
* Depression

While sufferers of these diseases may enjoy symptom relief at times, it is not necessarily only gluten causing the inflammation in the body. Firstly, the market for gluten free products far outweighs the number of medically diagnosed cases of coeliacs disease. In layman's terms, we are buying gluten free products to relieve systems like ADHD, autism, irritable bowel syndrome, and depression in some cases. While sufferers of these diseases may enjoy symptom relief at times, it is not necessarily only gluten causing the inflammation in the body to start with.


Secondly, with so many changes to the way food is processed, how can one food item (gluten) be responsible for so many ailments? There are a myriad of preservatives and additives used in the production process of food, which could be causing a combination of problems, which can't necessarily be solved by eradicating one element from your diet.
So to those unwell people, agonizing with a gluten free diet, talk to us first. You might be cutting out your favourite foods unnecessarily. Research shows that up to 98% of diseases have an inflammatory component. Your response to food is as individual as you are.
